Dangers Of Teens With Cell Phones

So you bought your teen or preteen a cell phone - no big deal. She uses it to call you from after school, she calls her friends from home so she doesn’t tie up the home phone line, and she even sends text messages to all of her friends. She spends so much time on that phone, she even takes it with her in the bathroom. Thankfully, you think that at least you can make a receive calls from your phone when you need to. All of the sudden you start getting weird questions and concerns from friends and neighbors maybe even the school administration about your child’s use of her cell phone. You think she is safe, but should you be concerned?

What’s the problem?

Do you always know what your child is saying on their used cell phone every time they are on it? Do you even know who they are talking to when they are using that phone? The reality is that it is very hard to keep up with the conversations that are taking place with your child when they can use that refurbished cell phone almost anywhere. What is the possibility that your child has met someone on the Internet that claims to be another kid in the area and then uses the cell phone to locate them and either come to find them or try to get them to visit them away from you? The reality is that many sex offenders are very smart and know how to use today’s technology to lure young kids into dangerous situations. It is essential that you are aware of how your child is talking to as well as what they are talking about on these phones.

The same can be said for text and photo messaging. Did you realize that text messages can be forwarded all over the world and even posted on the Internet? If your child sends out personally revealing information about you or your family via a text message, you can never get it back and that information can spread like a wildfire.

What can you do about this?

The reality here is that regardless of the innocent intentions of the subject taking these pictures, they ultimately are out of control of the photo taker once they are sent across the wire. There is no one that can stop, intercept or remove every copy of these pictures as they pass from phone to phone and website to blogs and so on. Parents, it is vital to check the content of your kid’s phones on a regular basis to do what you can to prevent this from happening. Also note that by contacting your local phone support center, you can have every picture and text message sent or received by your child’s phone retrieved from their database. While you still can’t prevent the information from spreading you can find out who they sent the information to in order to determine who it is that your child is privately talking to.
